Welcome, my friends, to Tuesday’s Let’s Talk on Kari Miller Blog!
Today we are talking about all things sports mom.
I am definitely in my sports mom era — and have been for six or seven years. And honestly? I’ll remain in this era for many years to come. I love this season of life. I love spending my days and weekends with families who are doing the exact same thing I am. I love watching my kids compete, grow, work hard, and enjoy playing the sports I grew up loving myself.
For today’s post, I want to talk about:
The challenges of being a sports mom
The amazing parts of being a sports mom
And some advice for those who are in this season now or will be soon
I hope this is a fun conversation — and I’d love to hear your own sports mom stories in the comments!
A Little Backstory
Sports have been part of my life since I was a kid. I played basketball year-round from age 7 to 18 and then continued into college. A huge part of what I’ve learned about being a sports mom comes from watching my own mom, who spent years in the stands supporting me.
And honestly? I’ve also seen some not-so-great examples of sports moms over the years. I learned from them too. I’m thankful for every example — even the bad ones — because they taught me what not to do, and how I want to represent myself when I’m standing in support of my child and their team.
Things Every Sports Mom Should Know
1. Sports Moms Cheer for Everyone
Of course you cheer for your own child — that’s natural! But a true sports mom is a mom of all.
The success of one child is the success of the entire team.
A good sports mom cheers, supports, and wishes well for every player.
Growing up, I cannot remember one time my mom spoke negatively about one of my teammates. Not once. I truly believe that helped shape my basketball career. I didn’t have negativity planted in my head about teammates or coaches. My mom set the tone: she wanted the best for everyone.
A mom’s positive attitude can be life-changing in youth sports.
2. Come Prepared
The key to a smooth sports weekend or tournament?
Mom’s preparedness.
We’re talking:
Snacks. Sunscreen. Drinks. Gatorade. Coolers. Chairs. Blankets.
Toys for siblings. Hats.
All the sports equipment needed.
And everything else you somehow only think of after you need it.
Preparedness truly makes or breaks the day.
I’ll admit it — I’m not the best at this yet. But thankfully my kids have grandmas who come to every sporting event, and they are ALWAYS prepared. I’m working on it and definitely a work-in-progress.
3. Be Engaged… But Not Too Engaged
Let me explain.
A sports mom should:
Know what’s happening in the game
Cheer and encourage
Support the whole team
And stay levelheaded
We should never get too high or too low based on a child’s performance.
This can be hard. You’re dealing with kids. You’re in crazy weather. And sometimes — wink wink — you’re dealing with referees or umpires who make questionable calls.
But at the end of the day, sports are just games. There are far more important things in life than the scoreboard.
Your child needs to know that when they get in the car after a game, you’re still Mom. You still love them. You still care about them — regardless of how they played.
My expectations are simple:
Try your best. Be coachable. Be a great teammate.
Everything else? Not worth stressing about.
4. Don’t Forget to Have Fun
Your sports mom era is numbered.
Don’t miss it.
There are very few seasons in life where you get to sit beside other families, moms, grandparents, siblings, and coaches who are walking the exact same road you are. Being present is such a gift.
Enjoy the highs and the wins.
But also appreciate the losses — because that’s where your child learns humility, grit, and perseverance.
What a gift to sit on the sidelines and witness:
Them falling in love with sports
Them learning how to lose
Them getting back up again
Them pushing through new or difficult skills
And them figuring out how to succeed even when it’s hard
This era is beautiful. It’s busy, yes — but it’s beautiful.
Don’t forget to enjoy it.
