Tasty Tuesday: Healthy Changes I’ve Made for my Family

Recently, I have been buckling down on nutrition, not just for me, but for my family. We had some kid behaviors that were starting to become too regular, and we really think nutrition was a leading cause of the behavior. My kids were eating too much junk and sugar. So a few weeks ago, Martin and I made the decision to be better.

My kids still have sweets and junk food, but at a much smaller scale. And the biggest difference so far has been bed time. Our kids go to bed much easier and peacefully.

I am going to share the tweaks we have made to help our family be more nutritious!

Breakfast: Prioritze Protein

I make sure that each kid has some protein in their breakfast. Eggs are a go-to. Madley likes protein pancakes or greek yogurt.

School Lunch: Back to Basics

If my kid isn’t eating school lunch, they get a basic packed lunch. We do a turkey sandwich, chips, fruit, vegetable, and a snack-sized candy. BOOM- basic and easy.

After School Snack: Make Healthy Options EASY

My kids come home from school STARVING. So I have made it a huge priority to have a healthy snack completely ready on the counter when they get home. I have fresh cut fruit out, hummus and pretzels on the table, I cut up turkey and cheese with crackers. I know they still try and raid the pantry for junk food, but at least they are filling their stomach with healthier option prior.

Dinner: Make the Dang Meal, Kari

I have been utterly shocked at what my kids have eaten in the past few weeks. For a long time, I wouldn’t make certain meals because the kids wouldn’t eat it. But I kind of said “screw that” I am going to make it anyway. The kids have been so open to trying new things and LIKING most of what I made. Baker loves broccoli cheese soup, who knew? Benny loves chili, who knew? Madley is a huge fan of steamed broccoli, never knew it.

Dessert: Use it Unexpectedly

My kids love when we just randomly offer a post dinner trip to DQ. They didn’t expect it or ask for it. If someone gets an awesome test score, we celebrate. It is fun to use dessert as a special treat for life’s special little moments. We have found that they aren’t asking for sweets anymore, so I think we have struck a healthy balance.

I can’t thank you all enough for offering all those fun, helpful, simple meal ideas. I have used so many of them and tweaked them to work for us.

Just for fun, here is our meal plan for this week:

Wednesday: Breakfast for Dinner

Thursday: Soup and Chicken Tender Salad
