Top 10: Mom Struggles

I want to be very authentic on this blog. I love sunshine and rainbows. And I share about those all the time. However, it isn’t always sunshine and rainbows… you know what I am sayin’?

Today I want to share ten things that I struggle with every minute, hourly, daily, and weekly. An area of my life is always riding the struggle bus. I hope this post can make you feel better about your life or at least not alone! Motherhood is a trip! I am also including memes/gifs that sum up each of my struggles for some bonus fun!

Disclaimer: I thought it was going to be hard to come up with 10 mom struggles. I sat down with a pen and paper and wrote 10 absolute homerun ideas in about 30 seconds. Not really anything to be proud of, but wanted to be transparent. Don’t forget, this is a safe space!

Let’s get to it…

Here are my TOP 10 Struggles I have as a Mom

Feeding Children

Not only am I responsible for feeding them breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but I also have to buy all the food, cook it, serve it, and then clean it up. Also, my kids can love a certain food (like LOVE) and then decide in a moment that they will never eat it again. But this lightbulb moment always comes AFTER I have purchased the COSTCO sized amount of that food.

Laundry

I am not (necessarily) talking about the every week type of laundry. The laundry that I am referring to today is the one thing that has to be cleaned and dried NOW. Where is that one thing? Well… that is where the adventure begins! You now get to go on a treasure hunt for a sock that was worn 6 days ago. You get to explore closets, under beds, dirty laundry hampers, backs of cars, and maybe even call grandmas to see if they have seen it. During the hunt, you usually call and yell at your husband because this isn’t mom’s fault. Anyone else relate?!

Getting Kids to Bed

Why can your nighttime routine work beautifully one night and then the next night it doesn’t. Every single night, Martin and I aren’t sure if getting kids to bed will take 15 minutes or an hour. Especially with three kids, it always feels like one of them goes rogue and hijacks the whole routine.

Kids Staying Asleep

Then once they are asleep, do they stay asleep all night??? RARELY! Maybe a couple times a month, all three kids stay asleep all night. Maybe.

Car Sickness

Anytime we have to drive in the car for over 10 minutes, someone is going to get carsick. Then the whining and crying about it continues until we get to the destination. I do sympathize, but I just don’t think whining and crying help, it usually makes everyone else in the car super anxious and annoyed.

The Youtube Obsession

My kids are super active, but if they get youtube on a tablet or phone. My kids would sit for HOURS without moving. It is terrible. I hate it so much. I hate it so much because I am guilty of letting youtube happen so I can have a moment of peace or productivity. I need to have a better tool that doesn’t rot their brain. Also, if my kids start watching youtube, they are like grumpy monsters when it is time to turn it off.

Getting Places/ Leaving at Specific Times

This is a major struggle for me. I just can’t seem to get my crew out the door at a specific time without threatening their existence. Their sense of urgency is zero… even if the thing we are trying to get to is for them or upon their request… HELP ME, HELP YOU!

And at what age, moms to older kids, do kids get in a car, sit in their seat, and buckle up?? It isn’t my kids’ age, I’ll tell you that. We have to go find a random golf ball that we found in a pond in April 2022 in the garage somewhere, then walk by our backpack on the way to the car. Then to realize we don’t have shoes on. Mom then pulls a Uey in the culdesac to go get shoes. But don’t worry, that golf ball is now being played with by his little sister while he runs to get shoes and backpack, which then leads to hitting and screaming to get it back. Then that little sister is crying so hard that she has lost all function of her body and claims she can no longer buckle herself up. PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME I AM NOT ALONE!!! Oh- and we showed up late to wherever we were headed… shocker.

Untimely Bathroom Breaks

During bedtime? You betcha.

In the middle of nowhere western Kansas? You know it- it’s an emergency!

Right when we sit down for dinner? Of course.

When you are almost up to bat? Better make it fast.

I could keep going… But you get my point.

School Lunches

Our schools offer three options for lunches, which is amazing. However, there are a handful of days a month that one of my kids doesn’t like any of the three options. On those days, I am racing to get a lunch put together. I can be on top of this, but then they will spring it on my at the last second. The alfredo they loved last month is now gross and they will never eat it again… well, great.

Brushing Teeth

I am OCD about teeth being clean. However, my kids are not OCD. I think they think that my main goal is life is to torture them by making them brush their teeth twice a day. At what point will they realize I am just trying to prevent cavities and not have you gross your teacher or friends out with your rotting teeth? I am so mean.

That was fun and I even made myself laugh out loud at some of these. I know you know this, but this blog post was just silly. I didn’t get into motherhood to have an easy life. Being a mother is hard, exhausting, and even painful most of the time. With all that being said, motherhood is a calling that God put in my heart, it is my purpose in life. It is my greatest responsibility. I fail so many times at motherhood, I am so glad God instilled forgiveness and grace in the hearts of children. They love me, flaws and all. I am so grateful that I have these 10 mom struggles, because that means I am Bennett, Baker, and Madley’s mommy!

So, this post was a way to release stress and let others know that I see them in their motherhood struggles, you aren’t alone! Don’t forget to laugh some today- they grow up too fast to waste time stressing or worrying about all our struggles.

  1. My daughter used to love when you’d forget to take your lunch with you because Scott would ask her to go over to the middle school to give it to you. It got her out of the school for a little bit and your dad knew she was very dependable. I don’t really know why I shared that. I guess I got to thinking about it when you brought up school lunches!

  3. I can relate to all of these! I guess once our kids have left home we’ll look back and laugh at some of these situations even though they weren’t funny at the time.
