Motivational Monday #27: Finding Peace in the Chaos

Finding Peace in the Chaos: How I Protect My Mental Health as a Mom

Let’s be real: motherhood is the most rewarding job in the world—but it’s also one of the hardest. We’re constantly pouring ourselves out—emotionally, physically, spiritually—and it’s easy to end up running on empty before we even realize it.

Between the diaper changes, school drop-offs, grocery runs, and never-ending laundry, our mental health can get pushed to the back burner. But here’s the truth I’m learning (sometimes the hard way): taking care of my mind and soul isn’t selfish. It’s sacred.

God cares deeply about our peace—and He offers us a way to protect it, even in the chaos.

 1. Make Space for Jesus in the Noise

Peace doesn’t come from silence—it comes from Jesus. He is peace.
And the beautiful thing is, He meets us right in the middle of our messy living rooms, noisy kitchens, and hectic carpool lanes.

Even five minutes in the Word or whispering a quick prayer while folding laundry can re-center your heart.

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” — Isaiah 26:3

Try this: Pick one verse for the week. Write it on a sticky note and place it where you’ll see it every day—your mirror, coffee pot, or steering wheel.

 2. Know When You’re Running on Empty

Moms are pros at ignoring our own warning signs. But God never asked us to be superhuman. He asked us to abide in Him.

Here are some signs I’ve learned to look for in myself:

  • I snap at my kids or husband over small things

  • I feel constantly behind, no matter how hard I try

  • I can’t remember the last time I truly laughed

  • My quiet time with God feels more like a checklist than connection

When you see these signs—pause. Take a breath. Don’t push harder. Press into Him.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

 3. Fill Your Cup with What Actually Refreshes You

Not all “self-care” is created equal. Scrolling on your phone may numb stress, but it doesn’t renew your soul.

Here are a few simple, soul-filling ideas that help me recharge:

  • Sitting outside with worship music and a cold drink

  • Journaling one thing I’m grateful for each day

  • Taking a solo walk and just breathing deeply

  • Talking to a friend who lifts me up spiritually

  • Doing something creative: baking, drawing, decorating—even badly!

And sometimes? A 15-minute nap in Jesus’ name is the holiest thing you can do.

“He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters. He refreshes my soul.” — Psalm 23:2–3

4. Ask for Help Without Guilt

Repeat after me: You don’t have to do it all. And you don’t have to do it alone.

Ask your spouse for help. Call a friend. Talk to a counselor. Let the grandparents babysit. Say no to that extra commitment.

God designed us for community, not self-sufficiency.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2

There is no prize for burnout, mama. But there is peace for those who trust God enough to let others in.

 5. Speak Truth Over Your Mind

Our thoughts shape our lives—and the enemy loves to whisper lies into tired hearts.

Combat those lies with the truth of Scripture. When you hear:

  • “I’m failing.” → “His grace is sufficient for me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

  • “I can’t do this.” → “I can do all things through Christ.” (Philippians 4:13)

  • “I’m alone.” → “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

God has given you everything you need to walk in peace—even on the hard days.

6. You Are Not Alone

If you’re in a season where your soul feels stretched thin, I want you to know this:
You’re not broken. You’re not failing. You are simply human—and you are loved by a God who never grows weary.

Protecting your peace is not a luxury—it’s a lifeline. And Jesus is offering it freely.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” — John 14:27

You are not alone, mama. And you don’t have to carry the weight of the world to be a good mom. You just need to stay close to the One who holds the world—and you—in His hands.

Let me know in the comments: What helps you protect your peace in busy seasons? I’d love to hear and encourage you!
