In the Thick of It: Caring for Your Heart in the Chaos of Motherhood
Let’s be real—motherhood is beautiful and sacred, but it can also be messy, loud, exhausting, and just a lot. The never-ending laundry, the meal planning, the constant questions, and the guilt over whether you’re doing enough… it adds up. And somewhere in the middle of the sippy cups, soccer practice, and Target runs, we forget about ourselves.
But here’s the truth, sweet mama—your mental health matters.
Not just so you can be more productive. Not just so you can “handle it better.”
But because God cares deeply about your heart, your mind, and your soul.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28
He doesn’t just call us to care for our families. He invites us to come to Him for rest. For strength. For peace that this world—and even that hot cup of coffee—can’t offer.
So how do we care for our mental health in the throws of motherhood?
Here are a few simple, real-life ways to start:
1. Start your day with truth—not to-dos.
Even five quiet minutes with your Bible can reset your whole mindset. Read a Psalm. Pray honestly. Let God’s Word replace the lies of comparison or failure.
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you.” — Isaiah 26:3
2. Ask for help—and mean it.
You were never meant to carry everything alone. Whether it’s your husband, a friend, or a sitter for an hour—lean into your support. Vulnerability is strength, not weakness.
3. Move your body, even a little.
A short walk outside. A five-minute stretch while the kids color. Movement clears your mind and resets your nervous system.
4. Speak kindly to yourself.
Would you talk to your best friend the way you talk to yourself? Practice speaking life over your motherhood journey—even in the chaos. You’re doing better than you think.
5. Make room for joy.
Not just for your kids, but for you. What brings your soul to life? Reading? Gardening? Worship music? Make space for the things that fill you, not just drain you.
6. Take your thoughts captive.
When anxiety creeps in or guilt takes over, ask: Is this thought from God or from fear?
“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 10:5
7. Rest without guilt.
Jesus took time away from the crowds to pray and rest. So can you. A nap isn’t lazy. A quiet moment with a cup of tea isn’t selfish. It’s necessary.
Sweet mama, God doesn’t just see the way you care for your kids—He sees you. The tired eyes, the full heart, the silent prayers whispered at midnight. You are not forgotten.
So take care of the woman raising those little ones. Not out of pressure, but out of love—for them, and for you.
You were made for this… but not to do it alone.
“He gently leads those that have young.” — Isaiah 40:11
